YSM’s undergraduate program is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of their chosen field of study and the skills and knowledge necessary for professional success in their careers as musicians. The curriculum includes performance, theory/ear training, history/literature, improvisation/composition, conducting, music education/classroom teaching, plus elective courses in many other areas.
Each year more than 1,000 people audition for admission to Yale School of Music’s undergraduate program. These include: high school seniors; current college students; graduates from conservatories who wish to continue studying at another institution; students from abroad; and young professionals who want to further enhance their musical skills without pursuing higher degrees.

For the class of 2021, Yale accepted 5,809 applicants out of 30,322 applications. The acceptance rate for this year was 19%.

What are the requirements for music applicants?
Each applicant must submit a portfolio of recordings and/or live performances. Please provide links to your website or to YouTube where available. (You may also send an email with a link to your website.)
Recordings should be uploaded to the online application. If no recordings are available, please include a short description of any previous performance experience.
Live performances can be submitted via video upload directly through Yale’s online application system. Performances recorded on video will be viewed more favorably than those recorded on audio only.

What does it take to be accepted into the Yale School of Music?
