Talking Heads are one of my all-time favourite bands. I was fortunate enough to see them on their final tour, and they were as tight as ever. Their music is so unique that it’s difficult to describe what they sound like. They have a lot of funk, but you could also call them rock or pop or punk or jazz, depending on what song you’re listening to. Sometimes they even sound like a gospel choir! Once In A Lifetime is one of my favourite songs by them – it’s up there with Take Me To The River and Road To Nowhere for me. And the video clip is just great too!
Talking Heads – “Once In A Lifetime” (1981)
Talking Heads’ David Byrne once said that ‘Once in a Lifetime’ was one of the very first songs he ever wrote. What he didn’t say is that it took him seven years to finish it, and another three years for the rest of the band to agree on its worthiness. The result is an album track that could have easily been a single, but instead became one of Talking Heads’ most popular and enduring songs. It’s also one of their best known songs, having been used countless times in films and TV shows: The Simpsons, South Park, Six Feet Under, and Frasier are just some examples.

Depeche Mode’s ‘People Are People’ was one of the first Alternative rock songs to hit the mainstream. It is a perfect example of how alternative music can be commercial and still be alternative.
The song was released in 1984 and became an instant hit all over Europe. In America, it didn’t reach as many people but still made it onto the Billboard top 100 charts (it peaked at 94). The song was also Depeche Mode’s first number 1 single in the UK and reached number 3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.
The song has been covered by many artists since its release including Dr. Dre, Moby, Dredg, and even the band itself on other albums. Its popularity has even led to remixes from DJ Premier, Roger Sanchez and others.
Depeche Mode is an alternative rock, electronic and synthpop band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The band’s original line-up consisted of Dave Gahan (lead vocals), Martin L. Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, chief songwriter after 1981) and Vince Clarke (keyboardist and composer). Depeche Mode have had 48 songs in the UK Singles Chart and thirteen Top 10 albums in the UK charts, two of which reached #1. Depeche Mode have been a trio twice: between 1980–81 (original formation) and again between 2001–04. The band has enjoyed critical and commercial success. Their signature sound is largely based on electronics and features use of synthesisers, sequencers and drum machines.
Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana (1991)
Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of the most iconic songs of the 1990s and arguably one of the most influential rock songs of all time. It was released as a single from the band’s 1991 album Nevermind, which became an international success and catapulted them to fame.
The song features Kurt Cobain’s distinctive vocal style, which makes it sound both angry and playful at the same time. He sings in a loud voice that has been described as “a roar”.
The lyrics are also complex, with numerous cultural references. They include lines such as “Load up on guns and bring your friends” – a reference to movies such as Natural Born Killers (1994), which featured characters who were obsessed with guns – and “I feel stupid and contagious”. You Oughta Know tells the story of a woman who found herself pregnant by a man who claimed to love her, but then decided that he didn’t want to be with her anymore. The song is brutally honest about how she felt about being left behind like a piece of garbage.
Alanis Morissette has said that she wrote You Oughta Know as an angry response to how she felt after her relationship ended. The lyrics are full of venomous lines like “You keep saying you’re sorry and I hate it when people say ‘Oh’” and “I wish I could hate you more than I do right now” and “I know we haven’t spoken since last September/But isn’t it strange how distance can make the heart grow fonder?” These lines reflect the feeling that there are some things that you can never forgive or forget about someone who’s hurt you badly enough.

The song that introduced me to alternative rock, Mr. Brightside was the second single released by The Killers in 2003. It was written by Brandon Flowers and Mark Stoermer, with its guitar riff being influenced by Oasis and the drums influenced by Queens of the Stone Age. It peaked at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and number one on the Alternative Songs chart.
With a catchy guitar riff and a chorus that has been stuck in my head for years (“I heard you were talking/ About me behind my back”), this song is one of those songs that I can listen to over and over again without getting tired of it.

The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 and selling more than one million copies in its first week of release. It has sold over 6 million copies worldwide as of 2010. The album was also nominated for Best Rock Album at the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008.
One of the most popular alternative rock bands to come out of the 2000s, My Chemical Romance was formed in 2001 by lead singer Gerard Way, guitarist Ray Toro and drummer Bob Bryar. The group has released four studio albums including their 2006 release “The Black Parade”, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold over 1 million copies in the U.S. alone.
The band’s first single from “The Black Parade”, entitled “Welcome To The Black Parade” peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart for five consecutive weeks and also hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart – an impressive feat for a rock group.
The group’s second single from “The Black Parade”, entitled “Famous Last Words” also made it into the top 10 on both charts and peaked at No. 5 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart while reaching No. 6 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs list, proving that My Chemical Romance had become one of rock music’s biggest new acts since its debut album in 2002 titled “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love”.

The first alternative music genre I have chosen is Jesus Christ – Brand New (2006). This band is an American rock band formed in Long Island, New York in 2001. The band consists of Jesse Lacey (lead vocals, guitar), Vincent Accardi (guitar, backing vocals), Garrett Tierney (bass guitar), Brian Lane (keyboard) and Derrick Sherman (drums). Their musical style has been described as indie rock and emo. They have released five albums: Your Favorite Weapon (2001), Deja Entendu (2003), The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (2006), Daisy (2009) and Science Fiction (2017).
I chose this album because it was released in 2006 when I was a teenager. I remember listening to this album during that time and loving it. It’s a very powerful album with amazing lyrics and great music. Songs like Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades, Sowing Season (Yeah) and Guernica are some of my favourites on this album.
Diane Young – Vampire Weekend (2013)
Vampire Weekend’s new album, Modern Vampires of the City, is out now. The band have already released a video for “Diane Young,” which is also the lead single.
Modern Vampires of the City is Vampire Weekend’s third album, following Contra and their self-titled debut. It was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim, Charli XCX) and Rostam Batmanglij (of Vampire Weekend).
Vampire Weekend’s Diane Young is a great example of an alternative music genre. The track was released on January 13, 2013, and it has been a success for the band.
The song is about a young woman who is trying to get away from her parents and their rules. She tells them she is going out with friends, but she actually goes to the movies with her boyfriend.
The lyrics are very fun, but they also tell a story. It’s hard not to sing along when you hear this song!
Los Ageless – St. Vincent (2017)
St. Vincent (Annie Clark) has been a staple in the alternative music scene since her debut album Marry Me in 2007. She has won multiple Grammys and other awards for her work, but she’s always stayed true to herself and created music that she wanted to create. Her latest album, MASSEDUCTION, is no different. It is a thirteen track masterpiece that shows off Clark’s versatile songwriting ability and her knack for creating catchy pop tunes that can also be played on a piano with only one hand.
The opening track “Fear The Future” is an ominous warning about our current political climate and its effects on the world as we know it. Clark sings:
Fear the future, fear the present tense
If we live long enough to see it coming round again
And then later:
They say love makes everything beautiful
But I don’t think they know what they mean when they say that anymore
This track sets the tone for the rest of the album – dark yet hopeful – which is exactly how I feel about my life right now, so it’s nice to hear someone else express those feelings through music.
